Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! is a bold and unusual reimagining of the Frankenstein myth, blending Gothic horror, crime drama and surreal fantasy. Jessie Buckley delivers a commanding performance as Ida, the resurrected Bride, while Christian Bale brings a surprisingly tender edge to the monster known as Frank. Their strange partnership drives a chaotic journey across 1930s America, filled with violence, rebellion and unexpected moments of connection.
The film's ambition gives it a distinctive visual style and several memorable scenes, though its many ideas sometimes pull the story in too many directions. Uneven pacing, heavy handheld camerawork and an overstuffed narrative prevent it from fully landing, particularly in the final act. Even so, strong performances and a fearless approach to the material make The Bride! an intriguing, if imperfect, take on the Frankenstein legend.
