REVIEW: Clayface (2026 Film) - Starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan

Clayface is a gruesome and surprisingly effective body horror thriller that transforms a lesser-known DC Comics character into the centre of a disturbing story about identity, obsession and revenge. Tom Rhys Harries delivers a compelling performance as Matt Hagen, a rising Hollywood actor whose life is destroyed by disfigurement before an experimental treatment gives him extraordinary abilities. As Hagen's body changes, his grip on reality begins to crumble, turning his desire to reclaim his former life into something far more sinister. The practical and computer-generated effects are spectacularly grotesque, while the film's confident pacing keeps the story moving. Naomi Ackie also makes a strong impression as the scientist whose treatment sets Hagen's transformation in motion.

The revenge plot is relatively predictable, and some supporting characters could have benefited from greater development, but these shortcomings do little to undermine the overall experience. Clayface works particularly well because it concentrates on its central character rather than relying on connections to the wider DC Universe. Its most disturbing moments come not simply from the gruesome imagery, but from watching Hagen lose his sense of identity and humanity. I thoroughly enjoyed Clayface. It is a bold, unsettling and frequently revolting horror film that delivers an excellent origin story while standing confidently on its own.
