The Mudita Kompakt is a refreshing alternative to the modern smartphone. Featuring a 4.3-inch E Ink display, a simplified operating system and a range of privacy-focused features, it is designed to help you spend less time looking at your phone without losing access to the essentials. I was particularly impressed by how easy it was to transfer music, audiobooks, ebooks and photographs using Mudita Center. Despite having no conventional app store, I was also able to sideload applications including WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook. Some features are limited by the screen and hardware, but the phone handled far more than I expected. The ebook reader, music player and offline maps all worked well, while the fingerprint reader and Offline+ switch added some welcome conveniences.
What I particularly enjoyed was the experience of actually using the Kompakt as intended. The E Ink display was comfortable for reading, I experienced no eye strain during my testing, and the smaller size made it easy to operate with one hand. Taking my child to the park with my regular smartphone left at home was a good example of what this device offers. I could still make calls and send messages if needed, but I wasn't tempted to check social media or emails. There are compromises, particularly with photography, video calling and the lack of a conventional app store, but these are understandable given the phone's purpose. I think the Mudita Kompakt works best as a second phone, giving you a way to disconnect from the distractions of modern smartphone use while retaining the everyday comforts of reading, music, podcasts and communication.
