Digger is an ambitious black comedy from Alejandro González Iñárritu, starring Tom Cruise as an ageing oil magnate whose actions trigger an environmental catastrophe. Cruise delivers a bold, exaggerated performance that demonstrates his range beyond his familiar action-hero roles. Striking cinematography, impressive production design and an unconventional approach to storytelling give the film plenty to admire, while its examination of corporate greed and political hypocrisy provides contemporary relevance.
However, the humour frequently misses the mark, and the environmental commentary can become heavy-handed. The supporting characters lack depth, while the lengthy running time occasionally affects the pacing. Digger has interesting ideas and Cruise gives the film a strong centre, but its ambition is not always matched by its execution. It remains an enjoyable, visually impressive film that could have been considerably better.
